A conservative activist says San Diego should not have to
pay the legal bill for its mayor's sexual harassment scandal.Martha
Flores-Gibson, a candidate for the Long Beach City Council, believes San Diego
city council members made an “intelligent” decision when they refused to pay
Mayor Bob Filner’s legal bills.
“That was a wise decision on their part because, if they
come around him and join him in the circle for him to stay until his trial,
then their credibility is on the line as well,” says Flores-Gibson.
Flores-GibsonFilner's
attorney said the city should pick up the tab for legal fees in a sexual
harassment lawsuit. The attorney, Harvey Berger, claimed that because the mayor
never received sexual harassment training, the city must pay the bill.
Berger wrote in a letter that the city has a "legal
obligation to provide sexual harassment training to all management level
employees."
Filner has been accused by eight women of sexual harassment.
Berger's letter came after the city council decided not to
pay for Filner's legal expenses.
“It's not the career politician's seat, or it's not the
politician's seat,” Flores-Gibson said of the embattled mayor. “It's the people
who vote them into office. So they have the responsibility not to the mayor,
but to the people of San Diego."
